Counseling and Support for Victims of Crime

You Do Not Have to Face the Aftermath Alone

Experiencing a crime can affect every part of your life. Even after the immediate danger has passed, you may continue to struggle with fear, anxiety, anger, grief, shame, difficulty sleeping, relationship problems, or a loss of safety and control.

At Courage Point Counseling & Wellness, we provide compassionate, trauma-informed counseling to help victims of crime process what happened, regain a sense of stability, and move forward at a pace that feels safe.

You are not responsible for what happened to you. Healing does not mean forgetting the experience or pretending it did not matter. Healing means reclaiming your voice, your confidence, and your ability to live without the trauma controlling every part of your life.

Who We Help

Courage Point Counseling & Wellness may support individuals who have experienced:

  • Physical assault

  • Sexual assault or abuse

  • Domestic violence

  • Emotional or psychological abuse

  • Stalking or harassment

  • Robbery, burglary, or property crime

  • Identity theft or financial exploitation

  • Traumatic accidents caused by another person

  • Childhood abuse or neglect

  • Community violence

  • The violent or unexpected loss of a loved one

  • Other frightening, threatening, or criminal experiences

You do not need to have visible injuries or a completed court case for your experience to have affected you. Trauma can develop after a single event, repeated experiences, or prolonged exposure to fear and control.

Common Reactions After a Crime

Every person responds differently. Some people experience symptoms immediately, while others notice them weeks, months, or even years later.

You may be experiencing:

  • Anxiety, panic, or constant worry

  • Nightmares or difficulty sleeping

  • Flashbacks or unwanted memories

  • Feeling constantly alert or unsafe

  • Avoiding people, places, or situations

  • Anger, irritability, or emotional numbness

  • Depression, hopelessness, or withdrawal

  • Shame, guilt, or self-blame

  • Difficulty trusting others

  • Trouble concentrating or completing daily tasks

  • Changes in relationships or intimacy

  • Fear about court proceedings or encountering the person responsible

  • Physical tension, headaches, exhaustion, or stomach problems

These reactions do not mean you are weak. They may be your mind and body’s response to an experience that felt overwhelming, threatening, or outside your control.

How Courage Point Can Help

Counseling provides a private and supportive place to talk about what happened without judgment or pressure.

Treatment may help you:

  • Understand trauma responses

  • Reduce anxiety and emotional distress

  • Develop coping and grounding skills

  • Improve sleep and daily functioning

  • Process traumatic memories safely

  • Challenge guilt and self-blame

  • Rebuild confidence and self-trust

  • Establish healthy boundaries

  • Improve communication with loved ones

  • Prepare emotionally for legal or court-related stress

  • Reconnect with meaningful relationships and activities

  • Create a plan for continued healing and personal safety

You remain in control of the counseling process. You will never be forced to share details before you are ready.

Trauma-Informed Treatment

Courage Point Counseling & Wellness uses evidence-informed approaches based on each client’s needs, goals, comfort level, and readiness.

Treatment approaches may include:

EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, commonly known as EMDR, may help reduce the emotional intensity connected to traumatic memories. EMDR uses structured bilateral stimulation while helping the brain process distressing experiences in a safer and more manageable way.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can help identify and challenge thoughts involving fear, guilt, shame, helplessness, and self-blame. It also supports the development of practical coping skills.

Internal Family Systems

Internal Family Systems can help clients understand the different emotional parts that may emerge after trauma, including frightened, angry, protective, numb, or self-critical parts.

Mindfulness and Grounding

Mindfulness and grounding techniques can help reduce panic, improve emotional regulation, and bring attention back to the present moment when memories or fears become overwhelming.

Relationship and Family Support

Crime and trauma can affect partners, children, parents, and other loved ones. Counseling may help families understand trauma reactions, improve communication, and provide support without blame or pressure.

Support During the Legal Process

The criminal justice process can sometimes feel confusing, stressful, and emotionally exhausting. Therapy is not legal representation, but counseling can help you cope with the emotional impact of:

  • Reporting a crime

  • Speaking with law enforcement

  • Meeting with victim advocates

  • Attending hearings

  • Preparing to testify

  • Writing a victim impact statement

  • Managing delays or uncertainty

  • Coping with the outcome of a case

When appropriate and authorized by the client, Courage Point may also coordinate with victim advocates, medical providers, attorneys, schools, or other members of the client’s support team.

Crime Victim Compensation

Some victims of crime may qualify for financial assistance through a state crime victim compensation program. Depending on eligibility and the circumstances of the crime, assistance may be available for counseling and other crime-related expenses.

Eligibility is determined by the appropriate victim compensation agency, not by Courage Point Counseling & Wellness. Our office can provide documentation related to counseling services when requested and properly authorized.

A Safe and Respectful Environment

At Courage Point Counseling & Wellness, you will be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect.

We understand that many victims have had their choices, safety, or sense of control taken away. Counseling is designed to help restore those choices. You decide what you want to discuss, what goals you want to pursue, and how quickly you want to move.

Your experience matters. Your feelings are valid. Healing is possible.

Take the Next Step

You do not have to wait until everything feels unbearable before asking for help.

Courage Point Counseling & Wellness offers counseling for victims of crime who are ready to begin rebuilding safety, confidence, and hope.
